Abrasive blasting cuts through coatings, weak cement paste, staining and surface contamination. Because the stream follows texture and small irregularities, it can be effective on walls, edges, ramps and detailed areas where a large grinder cannot maintain contact. Settings can be adjusted from cleaning to controlled aggregate exposure.

Blasting is not a structural repair. If the concrete is delaminated, spalled or cracked, preparation may reveal the defect but a repair system is still required. Weak substrates can erode quickly, which is why a test patch and soundness assessment are important.

When is grinding the better option?

Diamond grinding is useful for flat floors, high spots, adhesive removal and projects requiring a uniform mechanical finish. It can be connected to dust extraction and may leave a dry surface ready for further cleaning and inspection. Edges and vertical faces usually require smaller tools.

Grinding can smear some soft coatings or seal contaminants into the surface if the tooling is wrong. It may also polish hard aggregate rather than open the cement matrix. The selected tooling and pass pattern should match the coating being removed and the profile required.

When is pressure cleaning enough?

Pressure cleaning suits dirt, moss, loose paint, salts on the surface and general restoration washing. It is less aggressive and often lower cost when no bonded coating or defined profile must be removed. Hot water and suitable detergents may improve grease removal.

High pressure alone does not guarantee a coating-ready surface. It can drive water into cracks and pores, leaving the slab too wet for a membrane. Drying time and moisture testing may be required.

How do you match the method to the next system?

Coating, adhesive, repair mortar and waterproofing manufacturers specify surface condition in their technical data. Some need a clean open texture; others require a particular concrete surface profile. The preparation method should produce that condition consistently, including corners, upstands and penetrations.

Where different areas have different contamination, a combined approach can be more effective. Degreasing may come first, followed by grinding on open floors and blasting on vertical or textured sections.

What should be checked after preparation?

Inspect for remaining coating, laitance, dust, oil, weak concrete, pinholes, cracks and exposed reinforcement. The surface should be sound and free of material that can reduce adhesion. Any repairs should be compatible with the next system and cured as required.

Moisture is particularly important after wet preparation. The installer should confirm that the substrate meets the product limits rather than relying only on appearance.
